8 stories up.      3 seconds.      85 km/hour.      1 winner.

So goes the promo for the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series which takes place in 3 weeks time on Inis Mor – June 28 and June 29.

Cliff diving is the purest extreme sport on earth. 14 elite competitors – 10 of the world’s best cliff divers and up to 4 wildcards – will take turns at diving into the Serpents Lair on Inis Mor – a 20ft by 50ft rectangular limestone pool. And all this from an elevation that is almost three times the Olympic diving height and the divers hit the water protected only by their concentration, skill and physical control.
Inis Mor, the largest of the Aran Islands, is the venue for the 3rd leg of the famous Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. After the 2nd leg at Fort Worth in Texas on Friday, June 6, UK cliff diver Gary Hunt is in the overall lead in the series, achieving a record high score both for himself and the history of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series.
Greg Louganis, Olympic diving champion, is one of the judges coming to the Aran Islands to judge this hugely popular event. “Athletes are really upping their game, and they’re doing many more somersaults. It’s much more technical. They’re going beyond what they’re doing in the Olympic Games,” said Louganis. These athletes are adrenaline junkies who hit the water with a force nine times harder than the indoor divers at the Olympics.
